PLATINO EDUCA
We are beginning 2021 with numerous noteworthy new features in our catalog. First of
all, we are adding a series of outstanding Spanish releases from the last two decades:
La buena voz (a moving story about an unexpected reappearance of a family member);
La máquina de pintar nubes (about discovering painting as a vocation); the debut of
Beninese Omer Oke and Biscay Txarli Llorente, Querida Bamako (about the turbulence
of sub-Saharan migration); and a fun animation, Daddy, I'm a Zombie (winner of the
Young Audience Award, "Enfants Terribles" at the Gijón International Film Festival,
and nominated for the Goya Award for Best Animated Film). In addition to these is the
fascinating documentary, Murillo, el último viaje (about our celebrated Baroque painter)
and the short movie Atracones by Bernabé Rico (about body size discrimination).
What's more, this month we are moving closer to our goal of offering a catalog of
educational resources with a balance of both Spanish and Latin American productions. To
do this, we are adding several renowned Argentinian titles with considerable educational
value: Eva Perón, about the prominent First Lady of Argentina (winner of the Condor
Awards for Best Actress, Screenplay and Art Direction); the acclaimed El hombre de al lado,
about a seemingly endless conflict between neighbors (winner of the Condor Awards for
Best Screenplay, Actor and Music; the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and
Sciences Awards (Premios Sur) for Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor, New Actor and
Original Music; and nominated for the Goya Award for Best Iberoamerican Film); another
prize winner, Verdades verdaderas, la vida de Estela, about Estela Barnes Carlotto, the
teacher, human rights activist and chairwoman of the Association of Grandmothers of
the Plaza de Mayo; Javier van de Couter's debut, Mía, about discrimination suffered by
transgender people; and two animations: Fierro, based on the classic poem by José
Hernández, and Cuentos de la selva, a very free interpretation of the famous book of
children's stories by Horacio Quiroga.
And, of course, we are also continuing to incorporate new teaching guides for the
titles already in our catalog. Receiving their guide this month are: the award-winning
documentary, Sands of Silence, a moving approach to the delicate topic of sexual violence;
Cría cuervos, with Ana Torrent just as magnetic as we saw her in The Spirit of the Beehive
(winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival); Días contados, garlanded with
eight Goya Awards (including Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay) and with
the Golden Shell for Best Film and the Silver Shell for Best Actor at the San Sebastián
International Film Festival; and finally, Palabras de caramelo, a sensory experience which
was nominated for the Goya Award for Best Short Documentary Film.
