Why use cinema in

emotional education
Lola Villar Martínez de Velasco
The young people of today communicate in many different ways, with quick conversations
and using audiovisual language. We live in a time of education in which we no longer just
talk about new technologies but use them in our everyday lives; in which globalization
allows us to bring continents closer together and, therefore, allows us to understand
the world better. In the current climate, teachers need to look for ways to “connect” with
their students. This article is for teachers with exceptional communication skills who
master their subjects. The rest of us should focus on finding different methods to help us
continue learning about our main aim and the reason for our job: people. Therefore, we
are forced to find strategies and resources that enable us to connect with our students,
capture their attention, promote critical thinking, and continue educating with learning
tools that young people can understand and engage with more.
It is through this process that two essential disciplines for this new type of education
we are faced with emerge: cinema and emotional learning. They are multidisciplinary
and can be intertwined.
Today, the educational community has become aware of how effective it can be both
academically and non-academically. It is about caring for our students in a comprehensive
way. It is about considering a person in all of their dimensions (physical, psychological,
emotional, social and spiritual) and seeking student improvement not only through
academic performance, but in these other aspects too. This comprehensive picture of
our students can lead to very different and positive results.
