Te doy mis ojos, a feature film directed by Icíar Bollaín
In this film, the brilliant performance of the protagonists allows you to learn to recognize
emotions in others, in their looks and gestures, in the tension of their facial muscles, in
approaching someone and invading their personal space or with aggressive and hurtful
vocabulary. Students can recognize themselves in different situations and appreciate
that communicative style is also learned. They can stop, think, and observe how another
person is feeling, given that non-verbal communication offers a lot of information.
Another activity that can be used to develop emotional intelligence is to make students
understand how audiovisual stimuli affect our emotions, for example, letting them see
scary scenes without sound or happy scenes with sad melodies. What would happen
if you showed scenes from Álex Colls’s animated film, The Happets in the Rainbow
Forest (2014), but turned off the volume and put on the soundtrack of one of the most
disturbing scenes from Death of a Cyclist (1955), by Juan Antonio Bardem. They will
see the importance of distinguishing external stimuli that contribute to the creation of
emotions.
