A teacher’s perspective 35

A teacher’s experience of Platino Educa

Aránzazu Vilor Barros is an elementary school
teacher at the Melquiades Hidalgo school in the
Spanish municipality of Cabezón de Pisuerga
(Valladolid). She teaches the subject of religious
education (Catholicism) and, since 2016, she
is the school’s Coordinator of Education for
                                                     Development projects

In my school, we have always focused our attention on teaching our students values
such as solidarity, equality, respect, tolerance, commitment, and trust. So, our school’s
scheme of work for the past few years has been focused on the development of values-
based educational projects. This has led us to commit to carrying out Education for
Development and Global Citizenship projects, which have been a turning point, creating
excitement for the whole Educational Community. Our work has been awarded twice
(in 2017 and 2019) with the National Prize of Education for Development «Vicente
Ferrer» by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)
and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Spain.

A major objective of our most recent project has been to bring our students closer to
the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in an easy and fun way so
that everyone understands them. And this is where Platino Educa comes into play. As
teachers, we are continually looking for new materials to work on in our classrooms
(previously, we have used works of art, children’s literature, etc...). We think of cinema
as a tool capable of attracting and capturing the attention of students; as Breu and
Ambrós say, “the use of cinema in the classroom is a key dynamic factor to help promote
humanizing values, in a transversal and interdisciplinary way, and to contribute to the
development of values and elements of personal identity and belonging” .
                                                                                             1
