Synopsis In 1934, Diego Padilla wins the Spanish
With subtitles Chess championship and then meets a French journalist,
Marianne Latour, who he falls in love with. Sometime later,
Marianne persuades Diego to move to France with their daughter. However, in France
Diego is accused of being a spy by the occupying Nazis and locked up in an SS prison. To
survive in the jail´s hostile environment, Diego must capitalise on the passion for chess of the
commanding officer, Colonel Maier, a hedonistic, unpredictable and embittered man who
was injured in action.
