Los hijos del Ayllu (Natalia Pérez y Mario Torrecillas, 2013)
Before every movie, we did a task to determine the students’ interests and previous
knowledge of the topic. We wanted the students to have a good understanding
of what they were going to see, so we used the teaching guides. These movies let
us travel without leaving our town and encounter people with different realities to
ours. When our students saw these other children, they put themselves in their shoes
and understood their feelings; a few even identified with some of the characters that
appeared. Goal achieved: what we wanted more than anything was to raise awareness
and facilitate sharing our reflections. This is the first step in promoting a personal and
social commitment to transform our closest environment, our world.
To conclude, I must highlight my belief that cinema is a very powerful modern tool that
allows us to learn, helps us to understand, and lets us interact with different kinds of
information. It is also able to provoke emotions and reactions, allowing for reflection
and expression. It is, therefore, a magnificent instrument to work with in the classroom,
connecting all kinds of different content for different abilities with, in our case, Education
for Development (human rights, poverty, cooperation, solidarity, interculturality, etc...). We
are committed to continuing with this way of teaching.
